I am a professor of Deaf Education at the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma, USA. My colleague, Dr. Susan Easterbrooks (Georgia State University) and I are writing a new textbook for students preparing to teach deaf and hard of hearing children. It will be published in the Oxford Press series on evidence-based practices.
In 2010, I wrote a research brief for the VL2 lab at Gallaudet University: The Importance of Fingerspelling for Reading and I would like to add the research on fingerspelling to this book. For this particular book we are only including intervention studies.
Last February I conducted a fairly extensive review of the fingerspelling from an international perspective and found very few intervention studies. I did identify several embedded fingerspelling studies in various disciplines: neuroscience, linguistics, etc.
I am writing to you because your name was listed as an author in the upcoming publication: Deaf Studies Encyclopedia.
Do you know of any fingerspelling intervention studies that we might use in our book? Please feel free to forward this email to others who may be conducting research in this area or post on listservs.
