Middle East Dec 9, 2013

ABU DHABI, UAE: As part of Abu Dhabi Airports commitment to delivering world-class services for all passengers, Abu Dhabi Airports is further enhancing Abu Dhabi International Airport's accessibility by offering golf carts to passengers with wheelchairs. The golf carts are based in Terminals 1 and 3 and will assist in transporting passengers with mobility disabilities between the departure and arrival halls, and the aircraft gates.

In its efforts to cater to the needs of all passengers, Abu Dhabi Airports continues to proactively introduce services and facilities that would enable passengers to enjoy the amenities and offerings at the airport. In recent years, Abu Dhabi Airports has installed specialized ramps, rails, and e-Gates designed for persons with mobility disabilities at its airports to ensure comfort and accessibility.

Ahmad Al Haddabi, Chief Operations Officer, Abu Dhabi Airports commented: "Abu Dhabi Airports strives to provide all passengers travelling through Abu Dhabi International Airport with convenient and hassle free experiences. The commitment of all the airport partners and entities as well as staff members to deliver world-class services extends to all our passengers, taking into consideration their requirements and needs. The new specialized golf carts for persons with mobility disabilities, is yet another innovative service that we continue to provide to the growing number of passengers and visitors flying through the airport."

In 2011, Abu Dhabi Airports established a steering committee with major stakeholders at the airport, including Etihad Airways and the General Civil Aviation Authority, as well as representatives from the Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care and Special Needs, to discuss the means of accessibility for persons with mobility disabilities.

Saudi observes World Disabled Day

Middle East Dec 9, 2013

JEDDAH: The World Disabled Day was observed on Friday under the patronage of Prince Sultan bin Nasir bin Abdul Aziz as part of a campaign to bridge the gap between persons with disabilities and society at the Red Sea Mall in Jeddah.

The campaign was launched by Prince Sultan's office in Jeddah with the cooperation of the Jeddah Amal Center for the Disabled, Hope Center for the Disabled, the Jeddah Traffic and Civil Defense departments to promote social activities and to spread awareness of the importance of social responsibility toward persons with disabilities.

"I am very glad and proud of the Saudi youth who came forward to organize and participate in this program which is especially for persons with disabilities and children to help them integrate into normal society and save them from being alienated," he said.

Dr. Wasif Ahmed Fadil Kabli the deputy president of the advisory council and president of the executive committee of the Amal Center for the Disabled, said that they had organized the World Disabled Day to bring everyone under one roof and let persons with disabilities feel that they are part of the society.

"Our city is still not ready to accept persons with disabilities, so such programs will help people come closer to persons with disabilities and empathize with them," he said. "It is also the responsibility of the youth to come forward and lend persons with disabilities a helping hand to interact with society."

He said shopping malls and entertainment arcades should be equipped to facilitate the movement of people with mobility with disabilities so that they too can enjoy these leisure centers like everyone else.

The program opened with the national anthem and a patriotic song by Yaqoub Ali Jasees.

Rakan Baziyeed, a  trainer in wheelchair, thanked the prince and the organizers for the celebrations and said such programs were an opportunity for persons with disabilities to mingle with society and boost their confidence.

He demonstrated the proper and effective use of the wheelchair for mobility. "This is part of your life so it should be perceived as a normal means of transport," he said.

Workshop raises awareness on disability in Riyadh

Middle East Dec 6, 2013

RIYADH: An educational workshop for people with disabilities was organized at the National Museum of the King Abdulaziz Historical Center in Riyadh to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is observed every year on Dec. 3 as proclaimed by the United Nations to raise awareness on disabilities and coping mechanisms. It also seeks to increase the integration of people with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

The National Museum organized the workshop in collaboration with the Abaqera Center (Center for the Disabled Geniuses) on Wednesday. Programs at the daylong workshop, held at the Al-Tawheed Hall of the National Museum, included an introductory presentation, theatrical performances, educational workshops and lectures on disability awareness. Such functions help translate the international commitment for a disability-inclusive society into concrete action and strengthen global efforts to ensure accessibility for and the inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of society and development.

Studies show that there are approximately 1.5 million people with disabilities in the Kingdom, which corresponds to 7 percent. This is considered a normal rate compared to international disability rates, which reach 15 percent. The commemoration of this year's International Day of Persons with Disabilities provides an opportunity to further raise awareness on disability and accessibility as a cross-cutting development issue and further global efforts to promote accessibility, remove all types of barriers, realize the full and equal participation of persons with disabilities in society and shape the future of development irrespective of differences.
