| | | | | Press release For immediate release Inclusion International's 16th World Congress to celebrate 2013 International Day of Persons with Disabilities theme "Break Barriers, Open Doors: for an inclusive society and development for all" December 3, 2013 (London) Inclusion International (II) and its member organizations in 115 countries around the world are committed to ensuring that the voices of people with intellectual disabilities and their families are heard in global efforts to reduce poverty (post 2015) and ensure that no one is left behind. II and KAIH (Kenya Association for the Intellectually Handicapped) are pleased to invite you to join families, self-advocates, disability rights activists and professionals on 10 – 13, June 2014, in Nairobi, Kenya, for Inclusion International's 16th World Congress, and contribute to the dialogue on building A Better World for ALL. The Conference programme will be an opportunity to shape inclusive approaches to international cooperation and development that reflect the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Focused pre-conference events and sessions will explore: - Leaders for Change – renewing the family and self-advocate leadership in our movement;
- Partners for Change – strengthening partnerships with other disability groups, governments and policy makers;
- Practices for Change – exchanging good practices in different countries/communities
The 16th World Congress will also mark the culmination of Inclusion International's global campaign on the Right to Decide. People with intellectual disabilities have been clear that having a voice and control in their lives is a top priority; that the right to make decisions is essential for being seen and treated equally in community. Increasingly, we have heard that having the right to decide is important for securing all other rights. The development of a UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) represented an opportunity to secure this right in international law. This campaign looks at how we make this right real for people with intellectual disabilities.
