SHARJAH — Crowds gathered outside a special needs club in Sharjah on Sunday morning to watch an extraordinary man begin his journey to Abu Dhabi, in a solar-powered wheelchair.

By late afternoon, Hayder Talib, had already reached the Mall of the Emirates in Dubai.

Talib, director of the Al Thiqa special needs club in Sharjah, is making the journey on the eve of National Day to pray for Shaikh Zayed at Abu Dhabi Grand Mosque.

"We will spend the night in the hotel and start again at 9am to go to Abu Dhabi," he told Khaleej Times.

"We will take rest in the Seeh Shoaib Area on the border of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, where the Abu Dhabi police will meet us to follow us until we reach the mosque of Shaikh Zayed where we will pray for his soul," he added.

Talib  was accompanied by nine vehicles from Sharjah, in addition to six police patrols who diverted traffic to open roads.

On the border between Dubai and Sharjah, the police patrols were replaced by another six patrol cars from Dubai Police.

In addition, a large number of cyclists also accompanied him on his trip.

"My main objective is to show that people with special needs can do most things that normal people can," he said.

"People with special needs are grateful to the late Shaikh Zayed Al Nahyan, the founder of the country, who is considered a father figure by all its nationals.

"Without discrimination, he did a lot for people facing physical challenges. I will visit the mosque where he was laid to rest on National Day and pray for his soul on behalf of all the people with special needs," he added,

Talib said he hoped to be an inspiration to others.

"Through this challenge, I want people to realise that a physically challenged person can accomplish tasks performed by other individuals with the same enthusiasm and determination," he said.

"We have to work harder to prove ourselves in various fields in life and through such activities, realise our true potential and make life worth living."
